Terms & Conditions
Last updated: 11 June 2026
These Terms & Conditions ("Terms") govern your use of the Afripraat website and learning platform
available at afripraat.co.za ("Afripraat", "we", "us", "our"). By creating an account or
using Afripraat, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, please do not use the platform.
1. About Afripraat
Afripraat is an online Afrikaans First Additional Language (FAL) vocabulary learning platform for
school learners, with free classroom-management tools for teachers. Afripraat is operated from South Africa.
Contact: contact@afripraat.co.za
2. Accounts
- Teacher accounts are free of charge and intended for educators managing classrooms.
- Learner (student) accounts require a paid subscription to access the learning features.
- You must provide accurate information when registering and keep your password confidential. You are responsible for all activity on your account.
- If you are under 18, a parent or guardian must consent to these Terms on your behalf and, where the subscription is paid, the parent or guardian is the contracting party.
- We may suspend or terminate accounts that breach these Terms, abuse the platform, or attempt to manipulate scores, marks or leaderboards.
3. Subscriptions & Payment
- Learner subscriptions are offered as a monthly plan (R59 per month) or a yearly plan (R599 per year). Prices include VAT where applicable and may change; we will give existing subscribers at least 30 days' notice of any price change before it takes effect.
- All payments are processed securely by PayFast (payfast.io), a registered South African payment service provider. Afripraat does not store your card details.
- Subscriptions renew automatically at the end of each billing period (monthly or yearly) until cancelled, so learning is never interrupted. You can cancel at any time in the app (Settings → My Subscription) or by email; after cancellation no further payments are collected.
- If a renewal payment fails, we may suspend access to paid features until payment is received. Your learning progress is always kept.
4. Cancellation Policy
You may cancel your subscription at any time, with one tap. In the app, go to Settings → My Subscription → Cancel Subscription. Cancellation stops all future charges immediately; your access continues until the end of the period you have already paid for.
- You can also cancel by emailing contact@afripraat.co.za from the email address linked to the account, with the subject "Cancel subscription". We will confirm in writing within 3 business days.
- Cancelling does not delete your account or your learning progress — you can resubscribe at any time and continue where you left off.
5. Refund Policy
- 7-day cooling-off period: In line with section 44 of the Electronic Communications and Transactions Act (ECTA), you may cancel a new subscription within 7 days of first payment and receive a full refund, provided this right applies to your transaction.
- Monthly plans: After the cooling-off period, monthly fees are not refundable for the current month. Cancellation simply stops future billing.
- Yearly plans: After the cooling-off period, you may cancel a yearly plan and request a refund of the unused portion. The refund is calculated by charging every month you have used (including the month in which you cancel) at the standard monthly rate of R59, and refunding the balance of what you paid. The yearly discount therefore falls away if you cancel early — it applies only to subscriptions that run their full year. Example: you cancel 4 months into a R599 yearly plan. Months used: 4 × R59 = R236. Refund: R599 − R236 = R363. Once 10 or more months have been used, no refundable balance remains.
- Billing errors and duplicate payments are always refunded in full.
- Service failure: If the platform is materially unavailable for an extended period due to a fault on our side, you may request a pro-rata refund or credit for the affected period, in line with the Consumer Protection Act.
- To request a refund, email contact@afripraat.co.za with your account email and proof of payment. Approved refunds are processed back to the original payment method via PayFast within 10 business days.
Nothing in this policy limits any rights you have under the Consumer Protection Act 68 of 2008 or other applicable South African law.
6. Acceptable Use
- Use the platform only for its intended educational purpose.
- Do not attempt to manipulate progress data, scores, participation marks or badges, or to access another user's account or data.
- Do not upload word packs or other content that is unlawful, offensive, or that infringes someone else's rights.
- Do not copy, scrape, resell or redistribute the platform or its content without our written permission.
7. Teacher-Created Content
Teachers retain ownership of the word packs they create. However, by uploading a word pack to
Afripraat, you automatically grant Afripraat a perpetual, non-exclusive, royalty-free, worldwide
licence to store, display, reproduce, adapt and use that pack anywhere on the platform —
including editing it (for example to correct spelling or remove errors) and making it available to
other teachers and learners through the shared platform library. No payment or royalty is due to you
for this use, and the licence continues even if you later delete the pack or close your account
(copies already in the shared library or in use by learners may remain).
If you do not want a pack to be used beyond your own classroom, do not upload it to Afripraat.
You confirm that any content you upload is your own work or that you have the right to share it, and
that it does not infringe third-party rights.
8. Privacy & Protection of Personal Information (POPIA)
We process personal information in accordance with the Protection of Personal Information Act 4 of 2013 (POPIA).
What we collect
- Account details: name, email address, username, school name and account type.
- Learning data: word packs practised, attempts, mastered words, active days, badges and scores.
- Payment confirmation data from PayFast (we never see or store your card details).
How we use it
- To provide the learning service and show teachers the progress and participation of learners in their own classrooms only.
- To manage subscriptions and respond to support requests.
- We do not sell personal information to third parties, and we do not use learner data for advertising.
Children's information
Many of our users are under 18. We collect only the information needed to provide the service, and a
parent, guardian or school consents on the learner's behalf. Parents or guardians may at any time request
access to, correction of, or deletion of their child's information by emailing
contact@afripraat.co.za.
Storage and security
Data is stored with Google Firebase (Google Cloud) using industry-standard encryption in transit and at
rest. You may request a copy of your personal information, or request that your account and data be deleted,
by emailing us. Account deletion requests are completed within 30 days.
9. Availability & Disclaimers
We work hard to keep Afripraat available and accurate, but the platform is provided "as is". We do not
guarantee uninterrupted availability, or any specific academic result. Vocabulary content is provided for
learning support and does not replace the official school curriculum.
10. Limitation of Liability
To the maximum extent permitted by South African law, Afripraat's total liability for any claim arising
from the use of the platform is limited to the amount you paid for your subscription in the 12 months before
the claim arose. Nothing in these Terms excludes liability that cannot lawfully be excluded.
11. Changes to These Terms
We may update these Terms from time to time. Material changes will be announced on the website or by
email at least 14 days before they take effect. Continued use of the platform after the effective date
constitutes acceptance of the updated Terms.
12. Governing Law
These Terms are governed by the laws of the Republic of South Africa, and any dispute is subject to the
jurisdiction of the South African courts.
